KOKRAJHAR: A large people’s gathering was held at Kokrajhar on Monday under the joint aegis of ABSU, NDFB (P) and People’s Joint Action Committee of Bodoland Movement (PJACBM) to press for creating separate state of Bodoland. Hundreds of people joint the mass gathering and shouted slogans demanding immediate solution to the Bodoland imbroglio.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the gathering, former Rajya Sabha MP Urkhao Gwra Brahma said it was unfortunate that the movement group which was demanding new states in India had resorted to launch series of agitation due to the apathy of the Government of India. He said the time had come for the government to act as it had promised. “The Government of India has been systematically delaying the creation of new states in India,” he said, adding that the ball was in the court of the Centre and the government should fulfil its commitment.

Brahma said the demand of creation of separate Bodoland state was not new. The Bodos had been demanding separate state over the years. The BJP had promised to solve the Bodoland problem once they came to power but now the party had forgotten its promises, he said, adding that the time had come for the government to solve the Bodo problem.

Addressing the gathering, the chief convenor of the PJACBM, Rakesh Boro said the movement for new states in India would continue until the Government of India fulfilled the demand. He questioned as to why the Government of India failed to create Bodoland state if it could create Union Territories Ladakh and J&K and Telengana state? He also warned that the movement for new states across the country would intensify in the days to come if the government failed to take concrete policy for the creation of new states.
