LAKHIMPUR: The Ganatantrik Nagarik Suraksha Mancha (GNSM) has demanded the governments at the Centre and in the State to permanently resolve the flood and erosion problem of the State, caused by the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries every year.
The organization raised the demand as per resolution adopted in a meeting held in its head office, located at Sanjari Nwgwr, Simen Chapori of the Dhemaji district. The crucial meeting of the organization, convened in order to hold detailed discussion over several issues, commenced with president Jarimin Narzary in the chair. The objective of the meeting was explained by general secretary Tolan Sonowal.
Attending the meeting, United Bodo People’s Organization (UBPO) president Manuranjan Basumatary resented over the lackadaisical attitude on the part of the successive governments with regard to securing the common people from flood and erosion problem. “No government of the State paid due importance to secure the riverine farmers’ community from flood and erosion. Former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal promised that the basin of the Brahmaputra would be dredged and express highways would be constructed on the both banks of the mighty river to relieve the riverine people from flood and erosion and ensure their due development. Similarly, incumbent Home Minister Amit Shah, during the campaign for the last assembly election, promised that Assam would be made a flood and erosion-free State. But now these promises have become meaningless due to inactivities of the promise makers regarding the same,” the UBPO president said while demanding the BJP leaders and BJP-led governments in the State and at the Centre to keep their promises and secure the riverine indigenous people who earns their livelihood through agriculture. GNSM Jonai district committee president Hemkanta Daimary, Sissi-Silapothar district committee general secretary Amartya Rajbonshi laid stress on strengthening of the organizational base and reconstitution of GNSM regional committees under district committees.
After holding detailed discussion in the same meeting, GNSM took resolutions to hold the sessions of the central committee, Jonai district committee, Sissi-Silapothar district committee in the last week of October or in the first week of November and to translate the constitution of the organization from English to Assamese. The meeting also adopted resolutions to reconstitute the Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Dhakuakhana, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sadia district committees of the GNSM; to initiate movement for the permanent resolutions to the flood and erosion caused by the rivers like Brahmaputra, Lali, Simen, Dikhari etc.; to conduct extensive awareness programme against narcotic substances; to protect the Poba Reserve (Rain) Forest which is marked as the safeguard of Jonai; to demand for starting of classes in Industrial Training Institute set up at Siga, Dhemaji, by completing its half-constructed buildings.
