New Wildlife Sanctuaries in Assam

GUWAHATI:

A group that is involved with environmental activism called Nature's Beckon has asked the Assam government to establish two wildlife sanctuaries in Goalpara district: Pancharatna Wildlife Sanctuary and Ajagar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Nature's Beckon, an environmental activist organisation, has asked the Assam government to establish two wildlife sanctuaries in Goalpara district: Pancharatna Wildlife Sanctuary and Ajagar Wildlife Sanctuary.

The organisation has made an earnest request to the government to designate these woodlands as protected natural reserves in order to conserve the region's rich flora and wildlife.

Soumyadeep Datta, the director of the environmental activist group has made a formal proposition to the Assam Chief Minister on behalf of the other members of Nature's Beckon.

Forest Minister of Assam Parimal Suklabaidya has been asked to go through the proposal which is a subject of his approval.

The director of Nature's Beckon claimed that several significant topics concerning elephant conservation, as well as other problems concerning environmental preservation and biodiversity conservation, were discussed. The Forest Minister has assured him of his assistance, he noted.

"We have complete faith in the leadership of Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and we remain hopeful that under his able leadership, Assam will set an example in the field of biodiversity conservation," Datta said.

Datta went on to say that a high number of species crucial for ecological balance had been found in the area.

According to Datta, the organization's field investigations identified 168 kinds of wild birds in Pancharatna forest and 196 species of wild birds in Ajagar forest. Datta went on to say that the team has so far identified 36 species of animals in the Ajagar and Pancharatna forests. He insisted that the woodlands be turned into Wildlife Sanctuaries since they are home to unique and endangered plant and animal species.

Notably, the planned Pancharatna Wildlife Sanctuary has a total forest area of 976.08 hectares, while the prospective Ajagar Wildlife Sanctuary has a total forest area of 4240.0 hectares.

The Pancharatna forest stretches across the Garo Hills towards its southern border, allowing Asian Elephants to freely travel between Assam and Meghalaya. Similarly, the Ajagar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a huge population of Asian Elephants, and forest protection is critical to preserving the elephants' habitat, according to Datta.
