Guwahati: The
price of Petrol, diesel, and liquor will come down in Assam from February as the state government will withdraw additional Covid related taxes from next month.
State's Finance, Health and Education Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "All the additional Covid taxes imposed during the COVID-19 epidemic
will be withdrawn while I will present the vote on account."
Covid taxes on these products were levied by the government last year to revive state economy devastated after the novel coronavirus hit the state.
As Assam is expected to go to Assembly polls in April, the
state government is likely to present a vote on account in the state assembly
next month instead of a full budget.
In May, last year, Assam raised excise duty on Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) by 25% and in April the government increased the price of petrol from Rs 71.61 to Rs 77.46 per litre, and diesel from Rs 65.07 to Rs 70.50 per litre.
Himanta Biswa Sarma then said that the state government was losing revenue as the buying of fuel by customers had come down drastically. "To cover some of the losses we had to increase the prices. we are trying to protect our revenue by hiking the prices as earlier our monthly dues as royalty was Rs 166 crore but now we will get around Rs 50 crore."
"We will review it again once the coronavirus ends," he added.
