SILCHAR: The Minister of Water Resources, Information & Public Relations, Pijush Hazarika attended the distribution ceremony of scooters under “Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Awards” to meritorious students here on Thursday. The awards were presented to 2,934 students in Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj district who secured 60 per cent marks or above and 75 per cent marks above in the 2023 Higher Secondary Examination in Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj district.

Speaking on the occasion, minister Hazarika highlighted the biography of Dr. Banikanta Kakoti and said that the scooters are being distributed to create competition among the students to improve the quality of education.

The minister said that the current State government led by Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma has made the state one of the five developed states of India in all fields of education, health, communication system, income, etc. with the aim of enlightening the students of the state in the light of education.

He said that education gives stability in people’s lives, no one can take it away, only through the quality education the students will be able to keep the country as a model of excellence in the whole world. The State government has already doubled the number of medical colleges so that the students of the state can study in more number of medical colleges.

The minister also said that the award winners have become an inspiration to their younger ones and he hoped that the number of students receiving the awards would increase next year. This year, 35,770 students in the state have received the Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Awards. The minister also urged the award winners to drive their scooters in compliance with the rules and regulations such as obtaining driver’s licenses and wearing helmets.

MLAs Dipayan Chakraborty, Kaushik Rai, Khalil Uddin Majumder, Mihir Kanti Som, Superintendent of Police of Cachar Nunal Mahatto also congratulated the students with relevant speeches on the occasion and emphasized the importance of improving the quality of education in the state, the need for helmets, license while using scooters etc. to secure future life.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Cachar District Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jhan congratulated the students who received the “Dr. Banikanta Kakoti Merit Award” and said that among the 1,231 students who received the “Merit Award” in Cachar, 1037 were females and 194 were males. Similarly, 1249 students of Karimganj district. Among the students, 1042 are female students and 207 are male students. Out of 454 students in Hailakandi district, 384 are girls and 70 are boys. Cachar Zilla Parishad president Amitabh Rai, District BJP president Bimalendu Roy, Nitya Bhushan Dey, Kanad Purkayastha among others also participated in the event.
