Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the government would take every action within the ambit of the constitution to protect cows in the state.

Sources said that Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi during his welcome speech on the first day of the Assembly last Friday had said that the Assam government plans to introduce Cow Protection Bill to be passed in the next session of the Assembly.

CM Sarma said, "Cow is our mother. We will not allow cows to be smuggled in from West Bengal. Those places where cows are worshipped, beef must not be consumed. It does not mean that everybody has to give up and change habits all of a sudden."

While he was speaking on the motion of thanks on governor's speech, the CM informed the House that BJP has been given the mandate by the people to seek re-verification of NRC and close down of madrassas, which he will respect and follow.

"We believe that cow is our mother and people worship it. So, we will want that cows do not come from West Bengal. We will want that at places where cow is worshipped, it is not consumed there. I am not asking anyone to change their food habit but many times I have seen statement from Darul Uloom in Lucknow, asking the Muslim people not to consume beef in Hindu areas," he added.

The CM further stated that the Constitution of India in the directive principles says killing of cow should not be done and he will continue to appeal. He said that when in the house the day an AIUDF MLA supports this, it will start the beginning of a new Assam.

According to the reports, CM Sarma said that in a vibrant democracy, differences will be resolved in courts or assembly. But there are many areas where the ruling and opposition party do not have any differences and those are the areas where everybody can work together. "For instance, the government wants to work for the uplift and empowerment of Musilm women and the opposition, too, supports this. So, we can together work in this area. But we want a two-child policy and if the opposition does not want to follow, we will work in our own ways," the CM added.

He also said that under the Directive principles of state policy under the Constitution, cow slaughter must be stopped. No illegal cartel of cow trade will be allowed.

The CM got major support from BJP MLA Jayanta Mallah Baruah and other party leaders during the session.
