GUWAHATI: Following a tip-off regarding presence of poachers inside West Margherita Range of Dehing Patkai National Park, a search party was sent to apprehend them on Sunday. Divisional Forest Officer, Digboi informed that a gang of poachers on spotting the forest personnel, jumped into the Dehing river and escaped. A country made gun and deer meat was recovered from the area. Later, raid was conducted by the forest personnel in the houses of poachers with the help of local police and some deer meat was recovered. The poachers have been identified as Akoman Koch about 50 years and his son of Bitor Powai village. An offence under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 has been registered by West Margherita Range and an FIR under the Arms Act was launched with Margherita Police Station. Investigation is on to apprehend the poachers and to identify the buyers. Samples of seized meat will be sent for forensic analysis.
