Guwahati: A protest along the West Karbi Anglong-Ri Bhoi interstate border led to the damage of one police bunker by a group of protestors from Meghalaya. The police bunker belonged to the Assam Police. The incident is reported to have taken place on Tuesday.

Senior police officers from Assam and Meghalaya reached the spot quickly without delay and brought the situation under control, as per reports.

The protest is said to have been sparked by the mistreatment of a man belonging to the bordering state by one Assam Police personnel at a checkpoint in Umlapher area. This triggered a group of people from Meghalaya who gheraoed the camp of the Assam police and the protest led to the damage of one bunker by the protestors from Meghalaya. It is to be noted that there is no restriction on crossing the interstate border.

"Tension started at the Umlapher area in the morning after one personnel of the Assam Police camp allegedly misbehaved with a man from the bordering state on Monday night at a checkpoint," said A Basumatary, who is the SP of West Karbi Anglong.

The two parties came to an understanding after the West Karbi Anglong SP, A Basumatary, and the SP of Ri Bhoi District of Meghalaya engaged in a discussion and defused the situation. The issue was dismissed as a matter of misunderstanding.

"It was a result of a misunderstanding. Everything is peaceful now," said Basumatary.

It is reported that the protestors were also against the setting up of a temporary camp by the Assam Police in Umlapher area and the situation was brought under control after the Assam Police agreed to remove the camp.
