Guwahati: The Assam Chief Minister on Sunday asserted that police must be polite towards innocent citizens and at the same time, it should act sternly towards offenders or culprits.
The CM's statement came after a traffic police personnel named Fakhruddin Ahmed along with his colleagues assaulted a biker identified as Biki Prasad Gupta.
Speaking further on this with the media, Sarma informed that he had directed the police to extend an apology to Gupta and his family.
''After watching the video, I directed the city police department to initiate strict action against the police officials who were involved in this. I also asked them to extend an apology to the person and his family,'' he said.
'' During my last with SP's in Duliajan, I had clearly mentioned that police have to be polite towards innocent civilians and strict action against the offenders,'' he added.
Notably, outrage erupted after the video which shows Traffic constable Fakhruddin Ahmed and his colleagues assaulting Gupta in the broad daylight in the middle of the road at the Paltan Bazar area of the Guwahati metropolis.
In the video shared, the traffic official was seen stopping a man riding a bike along with his family. As soon as he stopped the two-wheeler rider a big brawl broke out between the two following an argument as seen in the video.
However, in taking action against the case of police brutality, the higher official took no time to remove the traffic constable from his service.
In an order from the Police Commissioner, the traffic police constable Fakruddin Ahmed has been suspended with immediate effect for the indiscipline conduct in the middle of the road.
