GUWAHATI: In a shocking discovery in Assam's Charaideo District, the police recovered the body of a 5 year old minor girl who reportedly went missing since Sunday last.

According to police sources, the body was recovered last night from the Singlu river that flows through the Charaideo district in Assam.

The investigative team of the State Police department further informed that, the team recovered religious items often used during sacrificial offerings on Kali Puja were also found near the body of the deceased minor girl.

"Sacrificial items like red cloth along with ashes were also recovered by our team near the body on the riverbank, leading us to suspect it to be a case of human sacrifice," the Police added.

As per her family members, the minor girl was allegedly abducted from her residence in a tea estate while she was deep asleep. On being unable to find her at the home and the nearby vicinity, the eldest sister of the victim filed a complaint with the police.

It may be mentioned that, following the recovery of the body the police have picked up nine people for questioning in connection with the case and have already detained two of them.

Police officer Sudhakar Singh told the media that, "We have picked up nine persons for interrogation. Right now, we can't say for sure it was a human sacrifice case. We have sent the body for an autopsy. We have found some puja rituals near the dead body of the girl,"

It may be noted that, Assam's Adivasi areas are known for their superstitions, beliefs and the practice of black magic. Sources added that, as most of the populace in these areas are not educated and follow age old practices of superstition and black magic, such cases are often heard of in these areas. They easily fall prey to such ill practices.

Earlier in 2016, a similar incident was reported where a 4-year-old girl who went missing from her residence in the Charaideo district, locals later found her body near the Ratanpur tea estate.
