KOKRAJHAR: Since the uncertainty over holding BTC election due to COVID-19 pandemic is likely to be over as the State Election Commission (SEC) has sought reports of required auxiliary booth polling stations from the Deputy Commissioner and Subdivisional Officers (SDO), different political parties have welcomed the move of the SEC.

The BPF, which has been ruling the BTC since 2005 without any break, is running from pillar to post to strengthen the party base and reach out to all while the imminent opposition UPPL is also not to be left behind and their leaders and workers are working overtime to gain maximum support. The Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) led by Kokrajhar MP Naba Kr. Sarania, BJP and Congress along with the AIUDF are also working round-the-clock to grab the power of the council.

The political parties have started door-to-door campaigning to woo the voters in their favour after the SEC issued series of guidelines to be followed at the time voting. The SEC has directed the respective DC and SDOs of the four districts of BTC to take stock of existing polling booths in the council area and to seek auxiliary polling booths if required in the wake of social distancing and instructed to submit report by the first week of August. Pertaining to this decision, all the political parties have welcomed and shown their satisfaction over the protocol to be maintained by each and every one.

UPPL candidate from Chirang Duar constituency, Ranjit Basumatary alias BR Ferenga hailed the move made by the SEC. He said before a section of media persons that there must be new council government which would provide good governance in the BTC area. Arup Kr. Dey alias Champak, candidate of BJP from Fakiragram constituency, told media persons that the people of BTC were eagerly waiting for the council election. For this, the protocol given by the SEC should be followed.

Meanwhile, interacting with media persons, senior BPF leader and Social Welfare Minister of Assam, Pramila Rani Brahma clarified that there would be no alliance with the BJP in the ensuing council election. She said the BPF would contest alone in the upcoming election and would form the next government with majority representatives.

The Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) led by Naba Kumar Sarania also praised the SEC for holding council election at the right time. He also appealed to the all sections of people to strictly follow the lockdown protocol circulated by SEC. The former Executive Member of BTC, Doneswar Gayary also welcomed the decision taken by the SEC to conduct the election in BTC and he claimed that the BPF would get absolute majority and form the government in BTC for four consecutive terms.
