LAKHIMPUR: An award conferring programme was held in North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) in a befitting manner on Thursday. In the programme, the Pona Devi Sowarani Janani Bota (Pona Devi Memorial Mother Award) was conferred to Runu Saikia, a resident of Ghilamora under Lakhimpur district.

The award was launched from this year by prominent litterateur Dhanada Devi, in association with the Assamese Department of the college, in memory of her mother Pona Devi. The award will be conferred every year to the mothers of those students who will pass the graduation exam securing the highest marks from the Assamese Department. This year the award went to Runu Saikia, the mother of Debashish Gohain, an alumnus of the college, who secured the highest marks in the graduation exam from the Assamese Department.

The programme commenced with Ranjan Kumar Borah, the Principal of the junior section of the college, in the chair. Dr Arabinda Rajkhowa, the Head of the Assamese Department, explained the objective of the programme while senior Vice-Principal Dr. Dudumoni Bhuyan delivered the welcome address. Conferring the award, Dhanda Devi said, "There is the invaluable contribution of the mother behind the success of every person. This award is introduced as a solemn honour to that invaluable contribution of mothers." On the other hand, awardee Runu Saikia turned emotional receiving the award as an outcome of the credit of her meritorious son. She said that the award would inspire the mother's community. Professors Dr. Swapnali Chetia, Dr. Bornali Borah and Devadas Kakati delivered encouraging lecture while gracing the occasion as guests of honour.
