MANGALDAI: Finally after a long wait the demand for a National Krishak Swahid Memorial at historic Pothorughat in Darrang district of Assam has been tabled in the floor of Lok Sabha on Friday. Mangaldai Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia on Friday tabled the Pothorughat National Krishak Swahid Memorial Bill 2022 in Lok Sabha. Justifying the significance and importance of the historic peasants uprising at Pothorughat, a sleepy village in Darrang district, Parliamentarian Saikia said that on January 28 of 1894, the peasants of Darrang district had raised a strong protest against the enhanced land revenue and tax imposed by the colonial British on the rural farmers of Darrang district.

“On this peaceful uprising that took place twenty five years before the Jalliwanwala Bagh massacre, the peasants adopted the policy of non violence, but the British rulers without paying any heed to their protest opened indiscriminate firing killing as many as 140 peasants on the spot in which about 150 peasants sustained bullet injury. This episode is a glorious chapter of the history of freedom struggle of our Motherland. This supreme sacrifice of the rural farmers has been deprived of its mention in the pages of our history or its recognition in the national level. It is the need of the hour to construct a permanent National Memorial at Pothorughat in memory of these 140 Krishak Swahids,” said Dilip Saikia in support of the bill. Talking to ‘The Sentinel’ this evening over phone, Parliamentarian Saikia said that the house has accepted it for discussion and necessary action.

Mention may be made here that making an exception to all his predecessor Parliamentarians from Mangaldai or Rajya Sabha Members from Assam who failed to raise this issue in Parliament, Mangaldai Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia on the very first session of Lok Sabha in 2019 had raised the issue in the floor.
