Hailakandi: Preparations are on in full swing for observing the upcoming Republic Day in a befitting manner in Hailakandi district. A meeting was chaired by District Development Commissioner (DDC) Vikram Dev Sharma with the heads of different departments, prominent citizens, mediapersons, representatives of political parties, merchants’ association and drug dealers’ association at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall here on Tuesday.

Seeking the unstinted support and cooperation of all the stakeholders, DDC, Sharma said all out efforts must be made for smooth observance of the main Republic Day function at the District Sports Association playground and in similar functions under the jurisdiction of respective circle offices.

SDO (Sadar) Prodip Timung read out the minutes of the last Republic Day celebrations and sought suggestions for incorporating new programme to make the function attractive. Timung asked the heads of certain departments to come up with tableau highlighting different themes to create awareness among the people and urged them to use eco-friendly materials sans plastic while making the tableau. A tableau on generating awareness on social media will be put up by the district police. Around 10 to 12 tableaux will be on display.

Prizes will be given away to the cleanest village, municipal ward and office, to the best farmer, contingent et al, besides government assistance to beneficiaries under different schemes. Centenarians would be honoured during the event and special arrangements for transportation and seating would be made for them and their families.

The administration has chalked out various colourful cultural programmes as part of the celebrations. Patriotic films will be screened for the children. A friendly T-20 cricket match will be organised at the DSA playground. The meeting decided to hold another review meeting to take stock of the arrangements on January 20.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, EL Faihraem, Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath, Circle Officers and heads of various departments were present in the meeting.
