Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday to invite him to inaugurate the 75th biennial session of Asom Sahitya Sabha. The session is scheduled to be held in February 2020 at Sualkuchi, the silk village of Assam.
CM Sonowal met President Kovind in New Delhi along with Assam Finance Minister and session president Himanta Biswa Sarma. It may be recalled here that Asom Sahitya Sabha president requested Sarma to extend an invitation to the President of India to inaugurate the biennial session at Sualkuchi. Minister Sarma also underscored the need for a collective effort for a successful session.
The 75th biennial session of the Asom Sahitya Sabha will be held with a four-day programme starting from February 1st to February 4th, 2020.
For the proper organization of the session, a reception committee was formed on June 9th, 2019 with Himanta Biswa Sarma as the president and Kamal Kumar Baishya, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup as the working president.
Earlier this year, Asom Sahitya Sabha president Paramananda Rajbongshi urged people of Sualkuchi as well as the members of the units and branches of Asam Sahitya Sabha in Kamrup district to make the session a grand success.
During the session, various ethnic groups of the entire northeast will come together and will take a pledge to safeguard the identity of the indigenous population of the region.
The Asom Sahitya Sabha, the literary society of Assam is a non-government, nonprofit, literary organization of the state. The society was founded in December 1917 to promote the culture of Assam and Assamese literature. With nearly one thousand branches all over the country, the central office is located at Jorhat. The branches and the district units also have their offices in their respective places. A branch of the organization named Singapore Sahitya Sabha is launched in Singapore on July 28, 2019.
