Guwahati: President Ram Nath Kovind has called on the Assam government to protect and promote the Bodo language and literature.

The President had attended the 61st session of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha held in Tamulpur district of Assam on May 4 and he made this appeal while addressing the session.

Kovind said that the Bodo Sahitya Sabha played an instrumental role in ensuring that the Bodo language is introduced as a medium in schools and higher educational institutions of Assam.

The President also threw some light on the vital contributions made by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who made sure that the Bodo language was included in the eighth schedule of the Constitution.

He also went on to say that it is largely the responsibility of the society as well as the government to ensure the protection and promotion of a language.

Kovind had requested the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to undertake all necessary measures in this direction. He also confessed that he has an old connection with the Bodo society and also recalled that he always used to discuss the Bodoland issue when he was a Rajya Sabha MP.

He further added that literature and local language make different people bind together.

Chief ministers of different Northeast states and other dignitaries were also present at the event apart from President Ram Nath Kovind.

The prominent figures who were present on the occasion included the likes of Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, Sikkim CM PS Tamang, Assam assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary, CEM of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Pramod Boro, Assam minister UG Brahma and Toren Boro, the president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha.
