GUWAHATI: A minor girl was allegedly raped by an Imam (priest) of a mosque in Lanka's Udali area on Friday.

According to reports, the incident occurred when the mother of the minor girl was away from the house in order to fetch the goats.

Further, taking advantage of the situation, the imam identified as Abdul Samat went inside the house and committed the heinous act.

The accused Abdul Samat is the Imam of East Udali Mosque.

Following the incident, a complaint was registered against the 'Imam' at the Udali police station by the family members of the victim girl. On basis of the complaint, police apprehended the accused Imam and kept him under police custody for interrogation.

Earlier, on June 20, the body of a 9-year-old girl from Balidunga village in Morigaon district's Bhuragaon police station was discovered in a field near the Brahmaputra River.

The girl had been sexually abused, according to the postmortem examination report, and strangling was the cause of death.

The 65-year-old accused Sayed Ali has been sent to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for treatment as he was shot at by police while attempting to flee police custody.

He was injured with a gun wound in the knee and was taken to the hospital for treatment. "The accused tried to flee. Police resorted to two rounds of firing and he was injured," Morigaon SP Aparna Natarajan said.

On the other hand, a 60-year-old man got arrested by police officials on Monday in the Kamrup district of Assam. He was arrested for allegedly raping a woman on Sunday. Along with him, three other persons were accused of this horrific act but are still escaping from custody.

As per the sources, the old man has been recognized as Habibur Rahman, whereas the other three have been identified as Abdul Mannan, Samsher Ali, and Mazid Ali.
