GUWAHATI: Assam Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in a press conference at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital said that the UK variant of the COVID-19 infection has increased in Assam from April 3rd to April 9th.

In Assam, 4,069 people are currently receiving treatment for the disease. Further, As many as 573 people were tested on Friday were mostly rail and air passengers.

Meanwhile, the minister said that the Assam Government have given full authority to all the district administration head to shut down all the primary schools wherein there are more than 100 cases of COVID-19 (on an average).

However, in the districts where the number of victims is less, schools will not be closed, the health minister said.

It is to be mentioned that the state of Assam has already witnessed 6 districts with more than 100 cases of covid infections.

The districts are Kamrup Metro, Kamrup Rural, Nagaon, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, and Cachar.

According to Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sharma, he said that the number of victims in the Guwahati metropolis on Friday was 245. Today, the positivity rate is 1.6 percent. The state health department is fully prepared to handle the situation as it has expressed considerable concern over the whole issue.

On the other hand, the Indian Railway Ministry has announced that a fine of Rs 500 shall be imposed on the passengers for not wearing face masks on the railway premises or during travel in trains. The order has been issued on face masks for a period of 6 months till further instructions.

The Ministry has decided to take various measures in order to contain the spread of the "resurgence of Covid-19 pandemic."

"One of the specific guidelines is to wear face masks/covers. Fine up to Rs 500 shall be imposed on persons for not wearing a face mask/cover in Rly. premises(including trains)" tweeted the Ministry of Railway.
