Guwahati: On Tuesday, Gauhati University (GU) suspended Kandarpa Das for his alleged involvement in the IDOL scam.

Das has been accused of being the main culprit in the controversial scam surrounding the Institute of Distance and Opening Learning (IDOL) under Gauhati University.

Previously, Kandarpa Das had served as the director of the Institute of Distance and Open Learning.

On Tuesday, the Executive Council of Gauhati University were engaged in a meeting in which they decided to suspend Kandarpa Das.

The Distance Education Council (DEC) had approved eight courses to be offered by the Institute of Distance and Open Learning under Gauhati University, after being recognized by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The eight courses to be offered were approved for three years from 2010-2011. This was reported by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

According to the Comptroller and Auditor General, a total of 23 courses were offered by the institute which were unapproved. This has now caused uncertainty in the lives of  70,000 students who had taken up the course. In addition, the institute also collected an amount of Rs. 39.06 crores as fees from students who were admitted into these courses.

The Legislative Assembly of Assam has also reportedly tabled the report produced by the Comptroller and Auditor General.
