LAKHIMPUR: Prominent social activist of Lakhimpur, Chinu Saikia is no more. She breathed her last on Friday at 6:15 am at her own residence at Nakari under North Lakhimpur town. She was 66.
Born in 1954 at Barangabari of Sonitpur district, Chinu Saikia was one of the prominent leaders of the Anti-Foreigners Movement of Assam. She was the secretary of Sadou Chutiya Jati Mahila Sanmilan, vice-president of Lakhimpur district unit of Lekhika Samaroh Samiti, chairperson of Lakhimpur district unit of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti and lifelong member of Axam Xahitya Xabha. She was also popular as a poet and writer and active sport organizer. She had been suffering from diabetes for the past few months. She underwent medical treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital.
She is survived by her husband, retired bank officer Bipin Saikia, her daughter Nisha Saikia along with a host of relatives. At her demise, a number of organizations like Lakhimpur district unit of Chutiya Jati Sanmilan, Chutiya Jati Mahila Sanmilan, Chutiya Jati Yuva Sanmilan, Chutiya Students' Union, Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti, Hindu Yuva Chatra Parishad, Lakhimpur Jila Mahila Sanmilan, Lakhimpur Jila Mahila Sanskritik Bikash Sangstha, Lakhimpur Jila Mahila Pratibha Bikash Kendra and many other individuals and institutions expressed grief and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
