DOOMDOOMA: “Education has now become a multi-million dollar market. So the concept of the proposed New Education Policy, 2019 is wholly political.” This was opined by Dr Dinesh Baishya, Dean (Academic), Mahatma Gandhi University, Meghalaya and a leading educationist of Assam, while speaking as a chief resource person of a symposium on the subject held on Tuesday as a part of Asam Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Tinsukia District Committee’s 15th biennial conference to be held at Doomdooma from October 18 to October 20.
He further said that the under the new education policy, 50,000 existing educational institutions would be reduced to 12,300 by the year 2035. But Gross Enrolment Ratio (GSR) had been sought to be enhanced from 25 per cent to 50 per cent. Here lies the danger of privatization of the public institutions under Public Private Partnership scheme, he cautioned.
“To read the 500 pages policy, the government first fixed up June 30 as last date of submission of complaint/suggestions which was subsequently enhanced to July 30, which was too quite short a period for such an important project having far-reaching consequences in our society. Yet we should not hesitate to raise our voices unitedly against such policies detrimental to our language and culture,” he said.
Dr Abdul Quadir, former Principal Doomdooma College acted as co-ordinator while Dr PJ Barthakur, Principal, Doomdooma College, inaugurated the seminar.
