Goalpara: Hundreds of people from different areas under the Balijana and Kharmuja circles of Goalpara district staged a sit-in recently against the Assam Electricity Grid Corporation (AEGCL) in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
The agitators demanded compensation against the utilization of their land by the company for erecting towers and lining high power cables as per regulation laid down by the Ministry of Power.
“According to the regulation, the company will have to carry out a survey prior to the installation of the towers and connecting more than 66 KV wires. However, the AEGCL has constructed towers and connecting lines of 133 KV from Agia of Goalpara district to Hatsingimari of Hatsingimari and South Salmara district without paying compensation to the poor landowner farmers,” alleged Monisankar Goyari, a leader of the compensation demand committee.
Goyari further alleged, “A tripartite meeting was held on September 28, 2018, at the Goalpara DC’s office in presence of Krishsk Mukti Sangram Samiti and a representative from the company. A resolution was adopted then to undertake a government survey. However, some officials are trying to resume construction without that survey. We demand to stop this conspiracy and pay compensation through a survey without further delay.”
