LAKHIMPUR: The remaining agenda of the weeklong Intellectual Training Camp, jointly organized by Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad, Asom (HYCPA) and Viswa Hindu Mahasangha in North Lakhimpur town of Lakhimpur district was cancelled. The host organizations stopped the event on its fourth day on Thursday as the result of an untoward situation created by a man identified as Jakir Hussain, in the training camp by entering into the auditorium and breaking the discipline of the programme while intellectual deliberation was going on and as a mark of protest against the arrest of HYCPA State Committee president Balen Baishya, Lakhimpur district unit president Jugmajyoti Dutta and Tinsukia district unit president Surya Bhattacharya by Lakhimpur Police led by SP Ananda Mishra, and due to apprehension of insecurity towards the trainees participating in the event from different districts of the State, stated a press release issued by Lakhimpur district unit HYCPA president Jugmajyoti Dutta.

Notably, the weeklong event was held at Gopi Nagar Mancha Bhawan, Ward No. 10 of North Lakhimpur town from the evening of July 17. On Wednesday, Jakir Hussain, along with his wife and son allegedly created an untoward situation in the training camp by entering into the auditorium and breaking the discipline of the programme while intellectual deliberation was underway. It was alleged that the man created the situation regarding the removal of a flag which was kept hoisting in his house premises on the occasion of the upcoming Maharam. He allegedly charged the HYCPA members of removing the flag. Then the members of the organization held the man up there and informed the matter to the Lakhimpur police.

Police personnel from North Lakhimpur Police Station allegedly arrived at the camp venue half an hour later and took the man to the North Lakhimpur Police Station. Then SP of Lakhimpur, Ananda Mishra arrived at the intellectual camp venue and asked leaders of the host organizations to go with him to the Police Station. The late arrival of the police and the instruction of the SP prompted arguments between the SP and the members of the organization. At that time Balen Baishya was manhandled by the SP and he was dragged to the police vehicle along with Dakhinpat Grihashrami Xatra Xatradhikar Janardan Dev Goswami, Lakhimpur district unit HYCPA president Jugmajyoti Dutta, Tinsukia district HYCPA president Surya Bhattacharya. However, Lakhimpur police released the Xatradhikar later, but filed a suo moto case against Balen Baishya, Jugmajyoti Dutta and Surya Bhattacharya and then they were arrested. The arrested leaders of the organization was released around 8.30 pm on the same day.

Expressing resentment over the alleged “controversial” role of Lakhimpur Police regarding the untoward situation, HYCPA members staged a protest against Lakhimpur Police near North Lakhimpur Police Station premises by covering their face with black mask.

In the press release, Jugmajyoti Dutta criticized Lakhimpur SP Ananda Mishra for the untoward situation created by Jakir Hussain, that led to the cancellation of the weeklong intellectual camp. The organizers informed that trainees from as many as fifteen districts of the State participated in the event.
