SILCHAR: Braving police barricades, a well attended rally on Wednesday marched towards the Deputy Commissioner office demanding abolition of ‘divisive’ delimitation policy. The rally, organised by newly-formed Forum for Democratic Rights strongly protested the proposed chopping off two Assembly segments as well as erratic restructuring of various constituencies. Earlier, a meeting was held at Rajiv Bhawan here where speakers from various organisations including the Congress lambasted the BJP government for playing divisive cards in garb of delimitation. They strongly opposed the proposal of the draft put forward to chop off Katlicherra and Patherkandi Assembly seats, which the speakers marked as a preplanned scheme to weaken Barak Valley.
As the gathering at Rajiv Bhawan started the march towards DC office, district police led by Additional SP Subrata Kumar Sen tried to stop them. After a bout of scuffles the demonstration was however allowed to proceed. The forum later handed over a memorandum to the district administration.
