LAKHIMPUR: Along with the other parts of the State, a grave reaction against the final list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), published on August 31, continue in Lakhimpur.

The activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of Hindu Yuba Chatra Parishad, Asom (HYCPA) set the dummy copy of the NRC ablaze on Tuesday. By staging the protest, the organization rejected the NRC which was thought to safeguard the indigenous people of Assam. Leading the demonstration, Lakhimpur HYCPA president Jugmajyoti Dutta and general secretary Madhab Das came down heavily against the issue. They said in front of the media persons that this recently published NRC would not be acceptable for the State.

“This National Register of Citizens, which was updated fixing 1971 as base year violating the Constitution of India, has distinctly imposed the burden of illegal foreigners on the State infiltrated from 1951 to 1971. Similarly, lakhs of illegal foreigners have got their names included in the same NRC due to the role of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi,” alleged the president and general secretary of Lakhimpur HYCPA.

Notably, the central committee of the organization consecutively demanded to update the NRC fixing 1951 as base year and not to publish the NRC which was updated fixing 1971 as base year. Under such circumstances, the organization alleged that the publication of the NRC was an ‘extreme example of tyranny of the State Government’ which never paid any heed to public protest. So, the organization declared August 31 as ‘Black Day’. On the other hand, HYCPA central committee organizing secretary Bitumoni Gogoi alleged that National Register of Citizens co-ordinator Pratik Hajela intentionally excluded lakhs of Hindu citizens from the NRC and included lakhs of Bangladeshi migrants in the same. The organization further challenged the Union Government to update a national-level NRC fixing 1971 as base year if it was unable to update the same by fixing 1951 as base year. The dignitaries declared that their organization would intensify agitation until and unless the recently published NRC was scrapped.
