SILCHAR: The all-out operation against the Burmese 'supari' (betel nut), coal and urea syndicates took a significant turn on Sunday night when Cachar police detained the sister of former deputy speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly Aminul Haque Laskar and her son-in-law. Police, led by SP, raided the house of Aminul's nephew Rouf Ahmed, who had by that time escaped, and then picked his mother. On Monday too police raided the residence of Dipankar Deb, a supari dealer. As Deb had already fled away, police reportedly picked up his son. Rouf Ahmed was one of the big players of 'supari' and urea fertiliser syndicates. When Laskar, a BJP MLA from Sonai, became the Deputy speaker of the Assembly, Rouf's dominance increased tremendously.

However the recent drive by the district police and even encounter unnerved the key players who preferred to hide in a safer den. Big names like Abu Mazumder, Altaf Hussain had gone missing. Those who had been picked up were reportedly the employees or the family members of the kingpins. Residence of Altaf at Chamragodam had been sealed by police on Monday.
