Guwahati: Rajesh Narzary, an Assam Police personnel of 'Naik' rank, who was admitted at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) since April 7 due to COVID-19 related ailments, finally succumbed to death on Monday (July 20) to his illness.
"A piece of sad news for Assam Police family. Nk Rajesh Narzary of 9th Assam Police Batallion was admitted to GMCH since 4/7/2020 for Covid-19 related ailments. He was in ICU. Sadly, he left us for heavenly abode today. Deepest condolences to his family", G P Singh, the Assam ADGP (Law and Order) wrote in a tweet.
Narzary has become the second personnel of the Assam Police to have died of COVID-19 related reasons. On July 10, IRBn Havildar Hareswar Nath, a 53-year-old non-symptomatic patient with no comorbidities, had succumbed to death due to the COVID-19 at the IITG COVID care centre in Guwahati.
The father of two, an asymptomatic patient, suddenly died after his oxygen levels drooped down below normal levels. "With a heavy heart, I inform you that Shri Hareswar Nath, 53 years old, a non-symptomatic patient with no comorbidities succumbed to COVID 19 at IITG COVID care centre. His oxygen levels plummeted to 90 within hours and he collapsed. My deepest condolences to his family. RIP", Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet, informing about the havildar's death.
As on Sunday, 869 personnel of the Assam Police had tested positive for the dreaded virus, out of whom, 484 have recovered. Meanwhile, the corona situation has continued to worsen in Assam with a massive surge in cases registered at the community level. With 1,018 more COVID-19 cases detected on Sunday, the caseload in Assam has risen to 23,999. The number of active patients now is 7,916, and 57 COVID-19 deaths have been reported so far in Assam.
Across the nation, more than 40,000 fresh Covid-19 infections were reported on Sunday, capping India's deadliest week of the Covid-19 pandemic so far during which 2.38 lakh cases were reported. As many as 673 deaths were reported on Sunday.
