DHEKIAJULI: Former Prime Minister and Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi's 76th birth anniversary was observed as Sadbhavana Divas in Dhekiajuli on Thursday.
Earlier in the morning, Apurba Bhattacharyee, APCC spokesperson, along with Dhekiajuli Block Congress (I) president Prafulla Rabha, Haren Baishya, general secretary of Dhekiajuli Town Block Congress (I), and Nilotpal Borah, general secretary of Dhekiajuli town block Congress (I), offered floral tribute at the portrait of Rajiv Gandhi at Rajiv Bhavan, Dhekiajuli.
Later in the evening, all the Congress (I) leaders, members and supporters took part in a discussion held under the aegis of Keherukhanda Mandal Congress (I) at Keherukhanda. Participating at the discussion, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharyee said that to modernize the education system, Rajiv Gandhi came up with a National Education Policy in 1986 and he founded the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya system where he provided free residential education to rural sections from classes 6 to 12. Bhattacharyee added that Rajiv Gandhi always had a dream of a developed nation for which he did many things, including the National Education Policy in 1986, reduced Licence Raj and Panchayati Raj.
"Rajiv Gandhi was the one whose contribution to the development of the nation is benefiting us at present. For remembering his dreams, his social and economic work for taking the nation towards development, Sadbhavana Divas came into existence," said Bhattacharyee.
