Rare annular Solar eclipse viewing event held in Hailakandi

Hailakandi: The rare Annular Solar Eclipse viewing event was organized by Priscientia Coaching Centre in association with the Department of Physics, Assam University here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the event, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli dwelt at length on the rich legacy of scientists our nation has had from the days of Aryabhatta, Brahmagupta to current day APJ Abdul Kalam and motivated the children to develop the spirit of inquiry and curiosity on black holes, string theory, Rosetta Comet Mission, etc to find answers to them.

Professor Himadri Das highlighted the salient features of the eclipse while scientist Sandipan Das spoke on the evolution of science behind eclipses. Inspector of Schools, Rajiv Kumar Jha stressed on the importance of moving away from superstitions to developing scientific bent of mind.

Telescope from the District Aryabhatta Science Centre had been put up for students to see the eclipse in motion. Live transmission of Coimbatore eclipse was also being shown. Students and skywatchers gazed at the rare celestial treat with a ring of fire and were thrilled. “It was a rare and amazing experience to watch the eclipse in motion,” said Amit Paul, a student. Demonstrations on fighting superstitions around eclipses were taken up. An art exhibition followed by an elocution competition on space was also conducted. Scores of children participated with gusto and enthusiasm.
