Rare species of tortoise recovered by North Lakhimpur Police

LAKHIMPUR: North Lakhimpur Police on Sunday recovered four tortoises of rare species from the custody of a youth. In addition, police recovered some parts of the body of the fifth tortoise which had been killed.

The youth has been identified as Rubu Das, son of Thaneswar Das, living in Sanatan Gaon on the outskirts of North Lakhimpur town under North Lakhimpur Police Station. He had kept the tortoises concealed in order to smuggle them later.

Rubu had been bringing tortoises from a certain place under Biswanath district and smuggling them. Police recovered the tortoises on Sunday following information. Police arrested the youth after registering a case no. 606/2019 under section 379 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. On the other hand, the tortoises were freed in the pond of North Lakhimpur Ganesh Mandir.
