Guwahati: All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU), the apex student body in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) has urged the Central Government to provide aid to Rs. 10,000 to resolve the recurring problem of flood in Assam.

In a memorandum to the Prime Minister that the ABSU forwarded via the Deputy Commissioner of Chirang, the student body urged the PM to visit the flood-affected areas of Assam for an aerial view.

The ABSU, in its letter, also called on the PM to declare the floods in Assam as a "national problem." "Grant special financial package of Rs. 10,000 crore to the devastating floods of Assam mainly for the rehabilitation of the flood induced displaced people", the ABSU further requested PM Modi. The Bodo student body also urged the Prime Minister to grant a special package from the centre for the repairing of damaged embankments.

Dipen Boro, the President of the student body, told The Sentinel Digital that the floods – in both Upper and Lower Assam – need to be recognized by the centre and a solution for the long-term should be figured out. "In lower Assam, several of the embankments have been breached leading to a flood issue in the region. In Upper Assam also, areas like Dhemaji and Lakhimpur are reeling under floods. PM Modi was quick to visit West Bengal and conduct aerial surveys after the devastation of Amphan. Thus, since the flood and erosion in a recurring problem, it should also be declared as a national problem", Bodo said.

The student leader also opined that the Government should devise a "long term strategy" to resolve the problem of floods and erosion in the region. "This is not a temporary problem; this is a problem recurring time and again. Thus, we feel that a long term strategy is required to deal with the long term problem of floods in Assam", he added.
