LAKHIMPUR: The local people have expressed resentment over the snail-pace progress of the Subansiri right embankment (Bhimpora embankment) construction project at its 35 km point.

The devastating erosion caused by Subansiri River and its overflowing water breached the embankment at the aforementioned point in the last rainy season. Though the Water Resources Department have been implementing an embankment construction scheme at this point at present, the local people have alleged that the implementation has been progressing at a snail pace. They are apprehensive that if the implementation of the scheme does not complete in time, an extensive area under Telahi Development Block will be flooded by Subansiri River in the upcoming rainy season.

Regarding the issue, after visiting the site, president and secretary of Telahi-Kamalaboria regional unit of All Assam Students’ Union alleged that geo-bags had to be installed at large stretch of the estimated affected part of the embankment. The local people raised question over the quality of work too, with regard to the implementation of the project. Despite sending memos to the Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur and the relevant authority, they claimed that the district administration had not taken any action in this regard.
