SILCHAR: "A poisonous nexus between RSS-led fascism and corporate-controlled BJP government is the greatest threat the nation has faced since Independence," said Manik Sarkar, former Tripura Chief Minister and a CPI (M) politburo member.
Addressing the State convention of the left party here on Tuesday, Sarkar, however, expressed hope as commoners had at last started to protest as evident in the recent farmers' agitation which compelled the Modi government to withdraw three farm laws.
The State convention of the CPIM was held after more than three decades here in Silchar, once a bastion of the Left forces with figures like Nurul Huda who represented the constituency in Lok Sabha. However, for last two decades the party saw massive erosion in its support base with the meteoric rise of the saffron brigade.
To regain the lost ground, the State convention might be a booster, hoped a section of the Left-centric people of the valley. And for them, figures like Sarkar and Brinda Karat addressing the convention were an event to cherish.
Sarkar in a scathing attack against the Modi government, said the gap between the rich and poor was widening day by day due the pro-corporate policies of the Centre. The RSS-controlled government was ruining the democratic fabric of the nation with their fascism and divisive politics. To protect the Constitution as well the democracy, people should protest as the fascist only understand the language of resistance and protest, he said.
Citing the current scenario of his own state, Sarkar said the BJP-government led by Biplob Deb was taking Tripura to nowhere. The fascist government did not even spare the media, he pointed out.
Brinda Karat claimed that the Left was the only alternative that could protect the nation from the fascist government. Manoranjan Talukder, the lone CPI (M) representative in the present Assembly also spoke in inaugural programme of the three-day convention.
