LAKHIMPUR: Rich tribute was paid on Wednesday in Lakhimpur district to 16 martyrs of the Gana Andolan or Quit India Movement that took place in 1942 during the the freedom movement of India. These martyrs are Monbor Nath, Kumali Devi, Khahuli Devi, Kanika Devi, Chot Nath, Tileswari Baruah, Ratan Kachari, Moniram Kachari, Mangal Kurmi, Dayal Das Panika, Mahiram Koch, Sarunath Chutia, Lerela Kachari, Kark Gour, Kanaklata Baruah and Mukunda Kakati.

Notably, Monbor Nath, the leader of the ‘Mrityu Bahini’ during the Quit India Movement was shot dead by British on September 20 in 1942 while he was hoisting the ‘Swaraj Flag’ on the roof of the Dhekiajuli Police Station by throwing away that of the British. In addition to him, the aforementioned freedom fighters also made supreme sacrifice at the same spot by braving the British bullets for the nation’s freedom. On the other hand, Kanaklata Baruah and Mukunda Kakati embraced martyrdom in Gahpur on the same day. Though Mukunda Kakati and Kanaklata Baruah received due recognition from the government at the Centre and in the State as martyrs, the other persons who made supreme sacrifice at Dhekiajuli have still been deprived of the same.

In order to commemorate these noble souls, Mangalbodh Jagaran Kendra, a social institution of Lakhimpur, and Lakhimpur district unit of the Jogi Sanmilani, in association with North Lakhimpur Press Club, organized a shradhanjali programme at Tyag Kshetra of North Lakhimpur town on Wednesday evening. The programme started with lighting of hundreds of earthen lamps by prominent citizens of Lakhimpur who assembled there from different parts of the district.

The lighting of the earthen lamp programme was inaugurated by Birinchi Hazarika, a social worker-cum-son of freedom fighter Tirtheswar Hazarika. The shradhanjali programme was held under the management of Mangalmoy Patrika editor Sanjib Upadhyay, wherein Suren Hazarika, son of freedom fighter Tuniram Hazarika, Lakhimpur District Journalists’ Association president Sailen Baruah, writer-novelist Dhanada Devi delivered lecture by commemorating the martyrs.

In the same event, a book named ‘Swahid Monbor Nath Aru Raktata Biyallish’, written by Ambedkar Fellowship winner writer Prasanta Kumar Nath, was released by poet-cum-social worker Uday Sankar Hazarika. Mangalbodh Jagaran Kendra director Jiten Baruah, environmental activist Narayan Baruah, North Lakhimpur Press Club secretary Karuna Krishna Nath were among those who took part in the event.
