DOOMDOOMA: Rich tributes were paid to eminent journalist, litterateur and former editor of Asom Bani, Nirod Choudhury on his 21st death anniversary on Thursday. On this occasion, a commemorative programme was organised by Doomdooma Sakha Sahitya Sabha (DSXX) at its office premises. The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp in front of the portrait of Nirod Choudhury by DSXX President Bimala Baruah while Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha President Arjun Baruah offered floral tributes.

The commemorative meeting held thereafter was chaired by Bimala Baruah. Addressing the meeting, assistant teacher of Hoonlal Higher Secondary School and President, Doomdooma Sakha Lekhika Samaroh Samity Kiranmoyee Hazarika Baruah, former Professor of Tinsukia Women's College Dr. Neeta Paul and the nephew of late Nirod Choudhury, Tridip Mahanta recalled the contributions of Nirod Choudhury towards Assamese literature and Journalism and his association with Doomdooma. They also highlighted how late Choudhury had brought Doomdooma, a small tea town in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam and his birthplace to the limelight through his literary creations. Tridip Mahanta, the nephew of late Choudhury announced in the meeting that in order to encourage the budding writer he would institute an award in the memory of Nirod Choudhury from the next year. The award would be presented through DSXX, he added.

Anamika Lahkar and Debasmita Choudhury rendered two songs in the meeting while Dipanwita Baruah performed a dance on a popular song for the Assamese movie 'Chameli Memsaab' which was made on Nirod Choudhury's story. A good number of people attended the programme which was anchored by DSSS secretary Deben Deka.
