River Noa overflows, several villages affected in Kalaigaon

TANGLA: As a major part of the State continues to reel under flood water, the River Noa under Kalaigaon Revenue Circle in Udalguri district has also swollen due to incessant rains and several villages were flooded on Tuesday. In Kalaigaon area, Noa River has overflowed due to heavy rainfall since the past few days resulting in flash floods. As per official data of Assam State Disaster Management Authority, a total of six villages have been affected under Kalaigaon Revenue Circle in the district - No.2 Singribari, Rupatal, No.2 Amguri, Hapabari, No.2 Kalaigoan and Habibhanga.

The River Noa has breached embankments in Hapabari, 2 No. Singiribari and Rupatal as confirmed by Kalaigaon Circle Officer Biraj Baruah. “More than 880 families have been affected and relief aid is being extended in the area. Around 60 persons were evacuated in No. 2 Singribari,” said Baruah.

“The villagers of the areas have demanded immediate repair of the damaged embankment of Noa River as it is under the mounting pressure of floodwaters,” said a villager, Arun Sarma. While the historic Mekenzi road near Kalaigaon is reeling under knee-deep water, a portion of the road has been washed away and communication has been cut-off totally. Further, an under-construction RCC bridge of Khampakhola and an RCC culvert on the road from Kalaigaon to Udalguri have been washed away. The vital communication link to headquarter Udalguri has been cut-off.

Meanwhile, sources informed that the district administration has intimated the Water Resource department officials to visit the affected areas to take necessary measures. Kalaigaon legislator Maheswar Baro and BTC Speaker Tridip Daimary visited the affected areas and assured the people of a necessary help. They also asked the authorities concerned to take immediate measures for the flood-affected populace.
