KALAIGAON: As a major part of the State continues to reel under flood water, the River Noa under Kalaigaon Revenue Circle in Udalguri district has overflowed due to incessant rains. Several villages were flooded on Saturday.
In Kalaigaon area, Noa River has overflowed due to heavy rainfall for the past few days resulting in flash floods. The flood-affected villages are Rupatal, Bhehguri, Balipara, Hapabari, Gerua and Sagunbahi, No.2 Amguri, Govindapur, Garubandha, Udmari, Kaduchak, Rajapukhuri, Majarchuba and Chintagaon. Water entered several houses and about 100 families have not been able to cook their meals for 2-3 days. Moreover, the embankment along River Noa had given way under the mounting pressure of flood water and it was breached at Rupatal on Saturday.
Thousands of bighas of crops were destroyed due to floods. While the Kalaigaon-Udalguri road near Majarchuba is reeling under knee-deep water, a portion of the road has been washed away and communication has been cut-off totally. An RCC culvert on the same road from Kalaigaon to Udalguri has also been damaged. So, the vital communication link to headquarter Udalguri has been cut-off. According to report, embankment of River Kulshi was also breached at Bholabari on Saturday.
Further, sources said that Maheshwar Baro, MLA of Kalaigaon LAC, has intimated the Water Resources department officials to visit the affected areas in order to take necessary measures. Utpal Hazarika, SDO of Udalguri Water Resource, visited the affected areas on Sunday and assured the people of necessary help. MLA Maheshwar Baro also visited flood-affected areas on Sunday. People have urged the Water Resources department to repair the embankment or they would face a worse situation soon.
