DHUBRI: Road Safety Week was organized here jointly by Colleague and Dhubri SBI Pensioners' Association with a day-long programme at the auditorium hall of Sishu Pathsala Higher Secondary School recently.
Inspector Ashif Ahmed and Assistant Inspector Ariful Islam, officials from Dhubri District Transport Office, attended the meeting and spoke at a length on the various issues related to road safety and road accidents.
"Road accidents take place due to non-adherence to traffic rules and road safety norms. Rising trend of accidents can be minimized and casualty of road accidents can also be controlled with careful driving and by following traffic rules and road safety norms," the officials opined.
Secretary of Colleague and Dhubri SBI Pensioners' Association, Madhab Chandra Paul, while addressing the meeting, said that it was found that carelessness driving caused most road accidents, which needed to be checked at any cost as India was one among the top accident-prone countries in the world and number of deaths on road was also high compared to other developed countries.
"We will have to analyze the causes of accidents on roads and steps should be taken accordingly to address the issues, apart from non-adherence to traffic rules and road safety norms," Paul said.
Paul, in his speech said that a large number of accidents taking place in the country and Assam as well, was due to driving under the influence of liquor, driving without licence and poor eyesight. So, the department along with social organizations had to create awareness focusing on problems and lacunas. The recent increase in fines for traffic rules violators also figured in the meeting and was thoroughly discussed. A large number residents of Dhubri town participated in the programme and took a pledge to obey the traffic rules and road safety norms.
