BOKO: Kamrup Police and Kamrup District Transport Department jointly organized a road safety awareness meeting and a road show at Boko Gandhi Maidan on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by DSP Kamrup Rajib Kumar Saikia, DTO Kamrup, Rupjyoti Kalita, Sumit Rabha, Executive Member of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC), and other dignitaries. During the awareness meeting, Sumit Rabha, Executive Member of RHAC, said in his speech, “Government departments have urged people not to drive while drinking alcohol and also fined defaulters to control road accidents. But surprisingly, licenses are also being issued by the government for opening liquor shops. Instead of trying to establish quality schools and colleges in a rural area like Boko to take forward the future generation, two liquor shops have already been given license and this is worrying.”

DSP Rajib Kumar Saikia said, “We fine those who violate traffic rules to decrease road accidents. Even after that some people violate traffic rules. “We see e-rickshaws running on national highway, which is banned. So now, Kamrup district police and Kamrup District Transport Department will take action against around 90 e-rickshaws and in the coming days we will take action against more e-rickshaws which violate traffic rules.” Kamrup DTO Rupjyoti Kalita said, “If everyone obeys traffic rules and regulations while driving, then the accidents will decrease automatically.”

Dr Tapan Dutta, Principal, JN College said, “I have noticed that the State Government has provided scooties to girl students. But when they come to college, both girls and boys never use helmets. So, we decided to put restrictions on entry to college without helmets.” After the awareness meet, artistes performed a street play on ‘drunk and drive’ on the Boko Chamaria road in front of the Revenue Circle office, Boko. After the street play, DTO Kamrup Rupjyoti Kalita flagged off a road safety awareness rally to Boko town.
