GOLAGHAT: The people of Golaghat still cannot forget the incident that took place in Arengapara, Rangajan of Golaghat district on August 19 and August 20 of 2014. In the tragic incident, more than five persons lost their lives and many others sustained major injuries in police firing.

Notably, two Adivasi students were abducted by suspected Naga miscreants in the first week of August, 2014. In the meantime, in B sector of Uriamghat in Sarupathar subdivision, Naga miscreants harassed and threatened the Assamese people in the border area. Incident of firing and burning houses and made the situation tense. Few Assamese people died, several were injured and many had to flee from their homes and take shelter in the relief camps. On August 13, various student organizations and Adivasi student organization staged indefinite economic blockade at Rongajan.

On August 19, Golaghat Police along with CRPF went to the protest area at Rangajan and asked the protesters to clear the blockade. The resistance from the protesters led police to resort to lathicharge. The situation became violent. On August 20, bandh was called and many people came out with sharp weapons. Police officials tried to stop the crowd from entering the town area by resorting to blank firing. In the incident, few people died.

Later, curfew was imposed and to bring the situation under control, the Army was called. After 3-4 days the situation was brought under control. The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police were transferred. The Assam Government handed over the probe of the incident to CID on December 7, 2016. It has been six years since the incident and yet two Adivasi students - Fulson Kujur and Ajay Gorh- are still missing.
