LAKHIMPUR: The Rongali Bihu celebration, organized by the Lakhimpur district committee of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) like the previous years, kickstarted on Monday. Titled as Lakhimpur Kendriya Rongali Bihu Sanmilan, the three-day long event has been organized at the playground of North Lakhimpur Boys’ Government Higher Secondary playground and it will conclude on April 19.
On Monday, the agenda of the event began with a plantation drive at Lakhimpur by-pass road. Then Lakhimpur district AASU president Simanta Neog hoisted the AASU flag while organizing committee president Dr. Upen Dutta unfurled the Bihu flag. Lakhimpur district AASU general secretary Swaraj Sankar Gogoi inaugurated the swahid tarpan programme.
In connection with the programme, a total of 51 prominent personalities of the district, including Bihu exponents, cultural activists, poets, writers, theatre personalities, educationists, teachers of credit, school and college principals, doctors, social workers were given warm felicitations by the organization following the Rongali Bihu tradition. It was followed by a series of events on traditional games. The games’ competitions were inaugurated by Jayanta Goswami, a sports organizer of the district. Principal of Ujani Majuli Kherkotiya College, Dr. Jahnavi Lahkar Baruah inaugurated the ‘Mou Kunwori’ competition while Saru Bihuwoti competition was inaugurated by Dr. Bornali Borah, the Head of the Department of Philosophy, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous). In connection with the event, a Rongali Mela has also been organized.
On Tuesday, a series of literary competitions, Toka Bihu competition, Husori competition Bor Bihuwoti competition will be held. On the other hand, go-as-you-like competition, Bihu delicacy making competition, nuptial song competition, ethnic cultural convention, souvenir release programme, public meeting will be held on the concluding day. AASU chief adviser Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya, president-in charge Utpal Sarmah, general secretary Sankarjyoti Baruah will take part in the public meeting along with a galaxy of noted persons. On the same day, prominent Radio artiste, lyrist, dramatist Syed Saadulla will receive the prestigious ‘Aai Asomee Bota’. Notably, every year Lakhimpur district AASU, in connection with the event, confers the award upon notable personalities, who extend remarkable contributions to the State through their fields of work.
