GUWAHATI: According to Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the government is still committed to resolving the problems encountered by stakeholders so that inland waterways can continue to be a transformative force for the region's economic development.

According to a Monday official statement, Sonowal took part in a stakeholder meeting to explore the EXIM trade potential of Assam's Dhubri Port.

On Monday, Sarbananda Sonowal, the union minister of ports, shipping, and waterways, announced plans to build a new warehouse, road, and integrated office complex at the Dhubri Port for the benefit of Bangladeshi and Bhutanese stakeholders.

Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Dhubri, Assam, Sonowal said, "We are committed to releasing the wealth & economic potential of the interior areas of India by building in the infrastructure to enable smooth conduit over inland waterways. With a long history as a prosperous river port, Dhubri is well-positioned to unleash significant value by serving as the centre of the area's expansion. We have our work cut out for us today after our conversation with the trade stakeholders from Bhutan, Bangladesh, and India. I guarantee that all of their demands and concerns will be met in a timely way so that Dhubri port can reach its full potential.”

He further added, “During the six decades of the Congress' misrule, Northeast India has essentially stagnated. Nobody can dispute the significance and opportunities the Northeast has gained over the nine years from 2014, when the vibrant Prime Minister Narendra Modi led India. There is no turning back for the Northeast to continue with its growth and development now that Modi has dubbed it the Ashta Lakshmi of India.”

The stakeholders discussed a variety of problems and opportunities relating to the Dhubri Port during the stakeholders meeting. Among them, the necessity for dredging, particularly during the dry season for smooth passage of vessels, as well as the expansion of the weigh bridge's capacity and the installation of a mobile conveyor were brought up. The conference also included information about the digitization of all customs procedures at the port of Dhubri and the anticipated opening of the port of Jogighopa this year.
