DIBRUGARH: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal formally presented birth certificates to four children of Prerona Children Home at his Lakhinagar residence on Monday.

This made it the first such step taken in the State towards presenting birth certificates to the children of a children home. Sonowal, during the ceremony, urged the authorities concerned to pay enough attention to the areas of sports, culture and education, and bring about the all-round development of the children. He added that every child had talent, and that it was the responsibility of the authorities to nurture the talent through proper guidance and education.

Child labourers, ones without guardians, orphans, ones who have fled their houses and also the ones who had separated from their parents for various reasons, from the age of 6 to 14 years, were rescued from different areas of the district and given shelter in the Prerona Children Home from time to time. Earlier, so that the children at the children home did not face problems with respect to Aadhaar and admission in educational institutions, among others, because of the non-availability of birth certificates, Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha had advised the authorities to approach the District Legal Services Authority. Consequently, the authorities, with the assistance of District Legal Services Authority and District Child Protection Unit, were able to secure the birth certificates.
