GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hinted that all the schools, which are currently closed due to the rise of COVID-19 cases in the state, may reopen from February 15, 2022.

Speaking to the media the Chief Minister pointed out that the COVID-19 cases in the state are decreasing and hence the state government is mulling to reopen the schools. "We are closely monitoring the situation. The positive cases are decreasing. Hope that the situation will improve further. I think the schools could be reopened from February 15," he added.

Chief Minister also said that 9 lakh vaccination for the students has been done. Once, the schools reopen, the vaccination drive for the students will take place easily, he said. He also states that the government has aimed to achieve the target of vaccination.

Earlier, on 24 January the government of Assam through a modified SOP informed that all offline classes in various schools up to class 8 across the state will remain suspended until further notice.

The major decision by the Assam government came in concern of the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the state so that the spread of the infection can be prevented.

Until 30 January all the schools across the entire state with classes up to class 5 were directed to shut down for physical classes excluding the schools in the Guwahati metropolis.

However, the schools in Guwahati city are ordered to remain closed for students up to class 8. The modified SOP (standard operating procedure) stated that physical instructions in all the schools up to class 8 in all the districts of Assam will remain suspended.

In the SOP the government instructed all the mentioned educational institutions to adopt the virtual mode of education and avoid physical classes until any further order was issued by the government.
