Dibrugarh: Two died and three others were seriously injured in a bloody scuffle that broke out between two parties near Paltan Bazar on the night of Wednesday at around 10:30 p.m.

According to sources, Gunin Chetia, a resident of Laipuli, Tinsukia, and the prime accused, had a heated argument with a group of 7-8 youths over some issue of car light. Matters went out of the frying pan into the fire when Chetia, who claimed to be an attendant of a patient at Assam Medical College and Hospitals, was allegedly roughed up by the group near Shrishti Hospital, after having followed his car – Maruti Swift Dzire bearing registration number AR-20-4847 – from Paltan Bazaar Charali.

In a purported act of self-defence, Chetia took out a pocket knife that he was carrying with him and assaulted the group members. Due to the use of a sharp weapon, two youths eventually succumbed to the fatal injuries they sustained. While Dipak Mesh was declared brought dead at AMCH, Ratul Bora reportedly breathed his last late at night at AMCH. Three others, namely Pranjit Bhuyan, Rupam Nath and Manoj Dutta, sustained severe injuries and were undergoing treatment till the filing of this report. Meanwhile, the police have arrested Chetia and Sonu Ahmed, who was allegedly contacted by Chetia on phone before things took the ugly turn. Police said that the matter was still under investigation.

However, many locals could not take the news of the two locals getting killed and few others being injured, lying down. They took to the streets driven by the spirit of vengeance on Thursday morning, and damaged the Swift Dzire. Rumours of the prime accused being an Arunachali added fuel to the fire and the people were seen taking an anti-Arunachali stand. Even the Arunachal Pradesh Guest House, located behind JJ Memorial and Diagnostic Hospital, was learnt to have been zeroed in for venting out their anger before the police and security finally took control of the situation and staved off any further untoward incident. As all the victims were employees of AMCH and most of them were either from villages adjacent to AMCH or the campus itself, all the commercial establishments in places like Paltan Bazaar, Gabharu Pathar and Seujpur kept their shutters down for a larger part of the day.
