SEBA to introduce commerce as an elective subject for Class 9 and 10 students

In an effort to bring new changes in the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) curriculum, the education board has decided to implement commerce as an elective subject for classes 9 and 10. The new changes will be implemented from the next academic session for which new textbooks will also be introduced by the board.

Reportedly, the new commerce textbooks will be introduced for the academic session of 2020 and 2021 which will be available for the class IX and X students. The board has also stated its intention behind introducing the subject in the school level itself. As stated by it, the early introduction of the subject will let the students build a strong foundation on commerce subject right from their school days and make a proper decision of whether to study in the commerce stream in future or not. Moreover, by keeping it as an elective subject for students, it has let the students make their own decision without putting it as a burden on them.

Speaking about the new initiative by the board, SEBA Chairman RC Jain states that an early introduction with the subjects of the commerce stream is a must for the students and now with this approach, the students will be acquainted with subjects like banking, accountancy, insurance etc. This step will also make the students future-ready.

This is a praiseworthy step by the SEBA because knowing about a stream in advance will not only help the students in choosing the right stream in their higher secondary classes but will also enhance them with prior knowledge about it. This is often seen that students, out of attraction towards a subject take it up in the first year of their higher secondary studies, but ends up either failing in it or securing poor marks.

In another step taken up by SEBA, subjects like healthcare, private security, agriculture and horticulture were also introduced last year.
