DHUBRI: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Dhubri district unit of Seemanta Chetana Manch Purbottar planted seedlings at its office premises in ward no. 3 and felicitated journalists at Dhubri Lions Club auditorium hall on Friday.

A massive plantation drive was undertaken by the Manch in its office premises while wall paintings were done to create awareness among the people to protect and preserve nature and the environment as a whole, in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

Publicity secretary of Dhubri district unit of the Manch, Dipankar Mazumdar said that wall paintings were done at the initiative of Manch activist Promode Roy, who was an ardent nature lover and spent years in association with Nature's Beckon, a leading nature-based organization.

A brief ritual was performed before a mango tree by the senior members of the Manch with a pledge to protect nature. "We also planted hundreds of seedlings on the premises of our newly-opened office, which was carried out by the Manch's committees of wards nos. 3 and 11. The activists of these two wards will look after the seedlings planted and nurse them to grow them into trees," Mazumdar added.

Earlier, a host of media persons from across the district were felicitated with phulan gamosa along with gifts containing masks, sanitizers, pens and packets of dates. President of North East Committee of Seemanta Chetana Manch, Purbottar, Dr. Pratima Neogi spoke at a length on the role of media during the lockdown.

"Mediapersons are corona warriors as they put their life at peril to bring us news from vulnerable hotspots, quarantine zones and COVID-19 hospitals. We salute them and in recognition of their service during this crisis, we are felicitating them," Dr. Neogi said. Manch State committee Seva Pramukh, Debasish Dutta and vice-president of Dhubri Nagar Committee, Jogeshwar Sarma also addressed the meeting and hailed the journalists for their devotion, dedication and commitment to their job during the lockdown period in the district.
