Guwahati: The Jorhat District Administration has given permission to the banks and post offices to open select branches under the areas of the Jorhat Municipal Board that have been put under lockdown amid the surge in COVID-19 cases.

However, the administration has mandated all the COVID-19 prevention protocols including the wearing masks, maintaining social distancing must abide by the bank and post office branches, that would be remained open during the lockdown. In a notification, the administration also said that the bank and post office authorities will be allowed to operate their branches with only 50% employees during the lockdown period. Further, the administration has earmarked some of the major branches in the area which can be opened for transactions during the period.

The district administration has re-imposed total lockdown in the town after the latter reported an unnatural number of COVID-19 cases. The total lockdown had started from Thursday night and ends on July 15.

It needs mention here that Roshni Korati, the District Magistrate, has promulgated a prohibitory order and called for a Total Lockdown, from 7 pm of July 9 to July 15, in the areas under the Jorhat Municipal Board. Additionally, she has called for all the weekly haats and markets to be shut during this period in the entire district. This has been reported at a time when there has been a steady and alarming number of COVID-19 cases in the state.

"568 new #COVID19 patients recorded in Assam today, with 355 patients from Guwahati City alone. I advise Ghy people not to panic & take proper care", Biswa Sarma tweeted. With this latest surge, the number of COVID-19 cases in Assam has reached 14,600, out of which 5,423 cases are currently active.
