DIGBOI: Selfie-mania proved expensive for one Ankit Dey, a student of Class-X in Little Stars Senior Secondary School, Digboi, who along with his two classmates had encountered a wild elephant at the AOD protected flora belt. While taking a selfie, he sustained severe multiple injuries.
According to Soumin Debnath who had accompanied the victim, they had gone to take a selfie when they encountered a wild elephant and in the bid to flee on a bicycle, Ankit Debnath was left behind. Meanwhile, on being informed, the security forces who had mysteriously allowed the boys to get into the elephant zone, found the victim lying injured and immediately brought him to Digboi CHC. He was later referred to AOD hospital.
Soumin Debnath hails from Jagun and is staying as a paying guest at Purnima Nagar in a house owned by Biswajit Dey. Yasdep Chetry of the same class had a narrow escape. Conscious citizens have questioned how the students managed to climb the AOD protected plateau in the midst of the oil field, known for thick bushes and elephants? According to AOD trainee doctor and nurses, the victim sustained severe head injury and multiple fractures on the rib cage with marks of the elephant trampling on the chest of the victim. “The victim is in semi-conscious state of mind and has been referred to Dibrugarh for advanced treatment,” said an AOD doctor.
