DOOMDOOMA: A two-day national webinar on "Evolving Areas of Chemical Sciences in Shaping Our Everyday Life" was held at Sadiya College on July 28 and July 29. The webinar was organised by the Department of Chemistry in collaboration with the 'Internal Quality Assurance Cell' (IQAC) of the College.
The webinar mainly focused on important areas of chemical sciences such as sustainable energy and storage devices, environmental protection, waste management and green chemistry, medicinal chemistry and wearable diagnostic devices, forensic chemistry, polymers and chemistry of traditional rural technologies.
Among the key invited resource persons were Prof. Alak Kr Buragohain (Chairperson-Academic, Royal Global University), Prof. Diganta Kr Das, Registrar, Cotton University, Prof. Pranab Goswami, Professor of Higher Academic Grade, IIT Guwahati, Dr. Diganta Sarma, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Dibrugarh University and Dr. Bipul Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Sciences, Tezpur University. Prof. Alak Kr Buragohain spoke about the development of chemistry and its contribution to human civilization from a historical perspective to modern era in a chronological manner.
He also highlighted the bridge between chemistry and culture as well as the development of recent technologies which are ready to ignite the next industrial revolution. Prof. Diganta Kr Das highlighted some of the problems that humanity was currently facing and reminded the responsibilities of the chemists to find out sustainable resolution to those problem. Prof. Pranab Goswami discussed the chemistry behind biofuel cells and their application in wearable electronic devices and next generation biomedical appliances.
Dr. Diganta Sarma gave a lecture on green chemistry and sustainable synthetic approaches using green solvents such as ionic liquids and supercritical carbon dioxide etc. Dr. Bipul Sharma discussed the chemistry involved in drug designing and medicinal values of different plant species commonly found in our surroundings.
Three short invited lectures were also delivered by Dr Kalyani Rajkumari (Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Duliajan College), Dr. Gitashree Darabdhara (Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Suren Das College) and Dr. Rajarshri Bayan (Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Arya Vidyapeeth College). The speakers dealt on varied topics such as wastes to wealth, forensic chemistry involving explosive and abusive drugs and application of shape memory polymers, respectively.
Among the members of the organizing committee Brajen Borah, Principal, Sadiya College was the patron of the webinar, Dr. Rajiv Khatioda was the convenor, Dr. Ujwal Pratim Saikia and Dr. Sudarshan Gogoi were the co-convenors while Dr. Karunakar Panda was the Chairperson, IQAC, Sadiya College.
